/// Short answer
deck board takeoff — the planning answer
A deck-board takeoff uses the actual board face width and planned gap to estimate rows, then converts row length into boards or linear feet using stock lengths and a cut plan. Nominal board size is not a universal installed width. Separate decking from framing, fasteners, stairs, guards, foundations, and waste so the count remains traceable.
How do you estimate deck board takeoff?
A deck-board takeoff uses the actual board face width and planned gap to estimate rows, then converts row length into boards or linear feet using stock lengths and a cut plan. Nominal board size is not a universal installed width. Separate decking from framing, fasteners, stairs, guards, foundations, and waste so the count remains traceable.
Rows = deck width ÷ (actual board face width + gap). Board quantity then depends on row length, stock length, direction, seams, and cut plan.

Run the decking calculator
Use this decking calculator to estimate board rows, total linear feet, and whole stock boards from deck length, deck width, actual board face width, gap, and stock length. ProjectQty accounts for the fact that n boards create only n − 1 gaps, then applies your cutting allowance and rounds the final purchase quantity up to whole boards.

What should you measure first?
Measure the finished deck surface in sections and record board direction, actual face width, gap, stock length, picture framing, borders, and irregular cuts.
- Record surface length and width by section.
- Confirm actual board face width, gap, stock length, and direction.
- Separate borders, breaker boards, stairs, fascia, and picture-frame details.
What should you verify before ordering?
Framing, spans, loads, guard and stair requirements, fastening, ventilation, and foundations require approved project design.
- Use product-specific actual dimensions.
- Create a cut plan before final ordering.
- Keep linear feet and board count separate from framing quantities.

Deck Board Takeoff: Boards, Linear Feet, and Waste FAQ
Why does actual board width matter?
Rows are controlled by installed face width plus the gap. A nominal 6-inch board may not have a 6-inch installed face.
Does the deck calculator design joists?
No. It estimates decking quantity from entered dimensions and does not design framing, loads, stairs, guards, or foundations.
How should I handle deck waste?
Use a cut plan and keep the allowance explicit. Borders, seams, picture framing, and short stock can change waste more than a generic percentage.
